Food Glorious Food

It’s hardly a surprise that many of the Island’s most important events and social activities involve food and drink.

Today, the influence of highly trained chefs and international hospitality professionals has enhanced Jersey’s gastronomic reputation so much so that visitors regularly fly or sail in for lunch at a Michelin star hotel or restaurant or simply to chill out at a beachside bistro.

Jersey slopes from north to south catching the sun’s life giving rays and allowing plenty of fresh products to be grown – asparagus, grapes, and melons are among those that thrive in a climate influenced by the warmer atmosphere and waters of the Gulf Stream. The same of course goes for an abundant choice of the freshest seafood.

Beyond these shores many of the best chefs like Andrew Baird of Longueville Manor and Samphire CEO Chula Whelan, have acted as Jersey’s fine food ambassadors, via TV appearances or mentoring teams taking part in food festivals and other events.

Other outstanding chefs include Steve Smith of Bohemia, who achieved his first Michelin start at the age of 24. Similar accolades are also conferred on Mark Jordan, who is in command of the kitchens at the Atlantic, and has propelled the hotel’s Ocean Restaurant to its Michelin star status. Great food in a relaxed, casual atmosphere can be found at Ocean’s sister restaurant Mark Jordan at The Beach on the Island’s south coast.

Under the eves of magnificent Mont Orgueil Castle at Gorey – with views of France just across the water, the Crab Shack is the sort of place you might wander into after a day on the boat or a round of golf. Down the hill overlooking the harbour, the elevated terrace/conservatory at Sumas offers a picture postcard view, while Feast on the quayside is definitely one of Jersey’s favourite eateries.

The former Jersey Pottery now has a family of restaurants including a second, or rather the first, Crab Shack at St. Brelade’s Bay while next door is the Oyster Box, always a popular place to take visitors, and Banjo in St. Helier next to the Central Market.

One thing for sure is that wherever you go in Jersey you are spoilt for choice whether it’s popping out of a simple breakfast roll at the Hungry Man on the edge of Rozel Harbour or dining in world-class gastronomic style by the coast or in the countryside.
